Harlow Madden's Birth Chart

Thanks to Reader T for bringing Harlow Winter Kate Madden's birth time to my attention. (And thanks to all the readers who have returned to CelebAstroBlogy with me -- it means a lot!) Proud papa Joel Madden has posted on his blog that Harlow, his daughter with celebutante Nicole Richie, was born at 3:13 PM on January 11, 2008 (in Los Angeles). Source (among others) So here is his newborn Capricorn's birth chart:

This child has a very interesting chart, with mutable signs on all four angles and planets conjuncting all the angles. Retrograde Mars in Gemini is conjunct the Ascendant from the 12th house, which could have her vacillating between outgoing and extremely shy and/or constantly changing her look and vibe.

And Pluto in the final degree of Sagittarius is in the 7th house conjunct the Descendant, which forbodes a lot of intensity in her intimate relationships. We're talking serious power struggles here.

Retrograde Saturn (the father) is in the 3rd house a degree away from the IC. Given that the Moon (the mother) is in the 9th house in a relatively loose conjunction with the Midheaven, this suggests that Nicole is the one who wears the pants in the family, while Joel is more of the nurturer figure. (The 10th house represents the parent who is the authoritarian or disciplinarian while the 4th shows the caretaker.)

Uranus is in the 10th house also conjuncting the Midheaven, which suggests some volatility around this parent. The 9th-house Moon in Pisces could suggest Nicole is restlessly floating around a lot, constantly traveling and drifting. (Following her baby-daddy on tour, perhaps?)

Moreover, Saturn/4th house is associated with hardship in the home life, hinting that despite material wealth Harlow might endure some form of deprivation. (After all, her parents did give away all her baby shower gifts to underprivileged children. How could they cruelly put other kids' needs before their own child's? Gawd!)

Congratulations to Nicole and Joel -- it really does seem like they've committed to making major lifestyle changes to be good parents to this baby. I genuinely send them good luck and well wishes. I'm just saying, if HWKM grew up to be a teenage drama queen like her mama, it would be kinda fun to watch. I already eagerly anticipate her stormy relationship with Max Bratman!

Is Nicole Richie Really Pregnant?

Recently Nicole Richie and her boyfriend Joel Madden kicked up the pregnancy rumors a notch by purchasing a schwanky diaper bag. {Full story} So, as promised, here's an astrological analysis of the question of the hour: Does the food-phobic celebutante actually have a bun in the oven ... and if so, how is she dealing with it health-wise?

First let me start with the caveat that it is extremely difficult to look at pregnancy indicators in a natal horoscope, such as Nicole's, with an unknown birth time. The Moon and the 5th house are two important pregnancy indicators that cannot be pinpointed without a birth time. But I took a look at Nicole's chart just to see what is happening. There is certainly a lot of change, transformation and pressure in her life right now, but I'm not convinced that having a baby on the way has anything to do with it.

In her natal chart, Nicole has a surprising potential for nurturing and mothering, with her Virgo Sun conjunct the asteroid Ceres. This placement suggests that Nicole identifies with a mothering archetype and is a real caretaker.

But that does not necessarily mean the time to indulge her maternal tendencies is now. In Nicole's progressed chart, representing where a person's personality has evolved up to the present date, the Sun has moved out of orb of a conjunction with Ceres. Nowadays, progressed Ceres is closest to natal and progressed Saturn, and trine natal and progressed Chiron, which suggest barrenness and difficulty conceiving more than fertility. (A more auspicious time for pregnancy might have been two years ago, when the progressed Sun was conjunct progressed Jupiter, a planetary pregnancy indicator.)

Currently, Nicole is undergoing a profound transformation with Pluto squaring her Sun, as I first wrote about back in February 2006; her identity has morphed before our eyes. But the snakelike shedding-of-skin suggested by a hard Pluto-Sun aspect does not seem to me representative of the kind of psychic transformation that comes with parenthood. This, to me, says more about Nicole's grasping for fame and status over the past couple of years, and her utter and complete transfiguration, as her body wastes away (Pluto, signifying control issues, could suggest the rigorous self-discipline that many young women with eating issues are determined to maintain) and her personal style continues to change.

Transiting Jupiter currently trines Nicole's natal Mars and sextiles her Saturn. Again, without knowing the house placements it is difficult to pinpoint the significance of these transits, but the fact that Jupiter is aspecting archetypally "masculine" planets suggests that the luck and growth suggests that the good fortune and growth prospects it is bringing Nicole are not of a fertility-oriented nature.

Furthermore, transiting Saturn is aspecting the yod in Nicole's natal chart, suggesting the issues she presently has dealing with authority. Saturn is trine natal Neptune (substance abuse, unrealistic expectations), square Chiron (wounding), and sextile Pluto. With this aspect just getting tighter, and Nicole's sentencing date for her DUI case approaching, Nicole could face some serious punishment just like her BFF, SWSNBN,FPFHHP. And Saturn squaring Chiron could trigger Nicole's tendency to act self-destructive in order to feel in control. Whether or not she is pregnant, I'm concerned that she may not be taking the best care of her body.

It has been buzzed about that Nicole supposedly thinks being pregnant will keep her out of prison. Now, it seems to me that she could just as easily be creating the illusion (Neptune) of a pregnancy to gain sympathy from the authorities (Saturn) who have dominion over her fate (Pluto). Buying a diaper bag seems like a pretty blatant way to send the signal that she's knocked up, considering La Richie could have just sent out an assistant for it -- or waited until she actually has some diapers to put in the bag.

So, I'm not convinced that whatever's going on with Nicole's belly is a "baby bump." But that said, I hesitate to rule out the possibility of a pregnancy altogether without a birth time to do a really comprehensive reading. Sorry to be rather inconclusive, but ultimately we'll have to wait and see!

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden: Bad Influences on Each Other?

A reader recently requested a report on the rumor that Nicole Richie is pregnant -- with the very apropos follow-up question "If she is, is she taking care of herself?" And now comes word that in addition to an alleged bump, Nicole has been sporting major bling, sparking talk that she is engaged to cheesy Good Charlotte "rocker" Joel Madden. {Source} All this, while the threat of a jail sentence hangs over her head. Clearly, there's a lot going on with Nicole right now! There's so much to cover, this may well end up being Part I in a series of posts on the twiggy troublemaker.

For now, let's start with a look at her relationship with Joel. Based on their horoscopes, it seems to me that they may well be compatible as a couple, in that there is chemistry and attraction between them ... but whether the relationship is a healthy influence on Nicole is another question entirely.

Yet Nicole's Venus in Scorpio and Mars in Leo also form a passionate -- but volatile --T-square with his Venus in Aquarius. This again augurs good sexual chemistry ... but it may also hint that the relationship with Joel is stirring up the tendency toward relationship drama described by Nicole's Venus in Scorpio– Mars in Leo square.

Venus in Scorpio is extremely possessive and controlling, while Venus in Aquarius tends to be a little more distant and arm's-length. There have been many online reports about Joel getting annoyed with Nicole's constant calling and clinginess, and here we may well see the Scorpio/Aquarius Venus dynamic in action. Joel pulling away from her clinginess and possessiveness may in turn activate Nicole's Mars in Leo, which goes ballistic with a dramatic outburst designed to command attention.

Joel's Chiron in Taurus opposite Nicole's Venus, making a grand cross with Mars, is also troubling, as it suggests the relationship could be hurtful to her in some way, possibly stirring up insecurities about her body (Chiron in Taurus) or her femininity.

I'm a little nervous, too, about the grand trine between the Sun in Pisces, retrograde Jupiter in Cancer, and Uranus in Scorpio in Joel's chart, suggesting that while he is a creative being with a rebellious streak (albeit a cheesy one), he has a tendency to get out of control and possibly give in to self-destructive Piscean tendencies. For someone with Nicole's history of self-destructive behavior (drugs, eating issues), this might not be such a good influence.

Plus, her Sun sextiles his Jupiter, while her Uranus trines his Jupiter (much more closely than his natal trine), suggesting that she might egg on his excessive ways. These two malleable mutable signs may well vibe off each other, but a lot of emotional energy is stirred up when they're together, and I'm not sure it has anywhere to go but ping-pong back and forth between them, getting caught up in all those squares and oppositions.

The Skinny on Nicole Richie

Let's get one thing straight here: Nicole Richie is not undergoing treatment for an eating disorder. Rather, she is "has decided to undergo diagnostic treatment to determine why she's not been putting on any weight." {Source} Exactly what this treatment might consist of is unclear. Blood tests to detect whether she has tapeworms? A white-coated clinical observer logging every line of coke she does on a clipboard? Truly, medical science is miraculous.

All snark aside, I must concede it's a good thing that Nicole is getting help for whatever her weight issues may be. Back in May, when she first acknowleged she has a problem, I discussed the way Virgo natives like Nicole tend to manifest stress and anxiety through eating or stomach problems. And this could be a good time for Nicole to address those issues. Stationary Mercury and transiting Jupiter are opposing her Chiron in Taurus, impelling her to confront her body image insecurities and offering opportunities for growth and healing. The juggernaut of planets passing through Scorpio this month will pass over Nicole's Venus, bringing her awareness to what she values and her sense of self-worth, before opposing Chiron as well. I'm thinking the kind of treatment she needs is therapy to delve deep into the psychic pain that is affecting her physical health. This may not be easy work to do, but as I noted upon Keith Urban's recent entry into rehab, Mercury's retrograde through Scorpio is the perfect time to do it.

Currently, transiting Uranus is forming an almost exact yod, or Y-shaped formation, out of Nicole's natal sextile between Mars and Saturn. She is feeling a strong pressure to break free from the confines of her usual M.O. and the structures of her life. As Uranus will station and turn direct in November within orb of this yod, the karmic configuration will be active in her chart until mid-January. Uranus shaking things up can be traumatic for a control-oriented Virgo, but maybe a shake-up is just what she needs to reestablish herself on a more solid, balanced footing.

Steve-O, Uranus Is Showing

Sound the trumpets: A new birth chart has been added to the Celebrity Charts Vault. As promised, I have posted the natal horoscope of public urinator, unabashed drug user, rebound fling of Nicole Richie and all-around professional jackass Steve-O, born Steven Gilchrist Glover {Source}.

Now, you just know that Uranus is going to be prominent in the birth chart when someone dedicates his entire life to doing unexpected, shocking, immature, convention-defying stunts like urinating in public and showing his, well, anus at every opportunity. Sure enough, Steve-O's impulsive, mischievous Gemini Sun forms a trine with Uranus in Libra. Rocking the boat is second nature to him. Uranus also opposes Chiron in Aries, the "wounded" asteroid, suggesting the bodily-injury-prone nature of his brand of humor and the "kids, don't try this at home" disapproval it engenders.

The square between Saturn and Pluto, plus the sextile between Mars in fiery Leo and Pluto, suggest a tendency to challenge authority figures and assert his own power, aggressively if necessary. His Sun-Jupiter square in mutable signs makes Steve-O suggestible and prone to overdo and go too far. Watch out for his behavior to get even more out of control as Uranus transits his Jupiter in spring 2007.

Depending on the time of day he was born, Steve-O could have a self-destructive, addictive Pisces Moon, or an impulsive, aggressive Aries Moon, possibly opposing his Pluto. Can Nicole Richie Make It On Her Own?

I don't know whether to be worried or relieved that Nicole Richie and Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein have once again decided to call it quits. [Source] As I recently discussed, I was glad to see that Nicole seemed happier and more stable once she was back with her beau, but I was a little worried about the dynamic between her, a Virgo for whom stress goes straight to the stomach, and an easy-come-easy-go Aries like Adam:

It does seem that Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein cares for Nicole and has provided a stabilizing influence since they got back together. But I'm really not crazy about the aspects between them; he's an Aries with an Aquarius Moon, which is not really the grounded earth-water type that a Virgo-Cancer Moon like Nicole needs. I hope now that they're back together they will be happy and stable together, and that his support will help boost her self-worth... but now that I've looked at his chart, I'm not sure his fiery-hot Aries energy is good for Nicole's delicate Virgo stomach.

Indeed, it sounds like AM bailed in true impulsive-Aries, emotionally-detached-Aquarius-Moon fashion. According to the report, "'Adam basically dumped Nicole,' a source tells Star. 'He didn't want to keep going when it was going nowhere. He wanted out for a couple of weeks.'" Just the fact that he would cut her loose that way shows that Adam wasn't ready or willing to give Nicole the kind of support she needs right now. With his Sun-Venus conjunction in Aries, he's most definitely looking out for number one above all else.

Honestly, I think it's for the best for Nicole that Adam decided to cut his losses rather than continue to stay in the relationship and phone it in. What I'm concerned about is her ability to get through this breakup without coming to pieces. She just admitted to Vanity Fair that their last split triggered her extreme weight loss (though let's face it, her body wasn't exactly healthy the first time they were together). And now, with transiting Jupiter retrograding over her Venus and transiting Venus opposing her Jupiter, Nicole is in an intensely relationship-oriented place and may be extremely needy. She could rush into finding another partner as she did with her disastrous Steve-O fling. Or, with Chiron squaring her Venus, this energy could manifest as more self-harming body image issues. Now is a time when Nicole needs to be nurturing herself and figuring out what she wants to get from relationships. Virgos are so concerned with taking care of other people, they may ignore their own needs. Pluto is squaring her Sun until well into 2008; hence this is a period when she is figuring out who she is, how she seeks to grow, and what she wants out of life. If she takes this breakup as an opportunity to ask herself the right questions, rather than floundering in self-pity and self-destructiveness, the experience could really make her stronger.

But seriously, what are the odds of that happening? Exactly. I say she's down to 80 pounds and dating Pete Doherty by summer.

Nicole Richie: Virgo, Stress and Eating

Good for Nicole Richie for finally admitting that she is unhealthily skinny! I give her a lot of credit for speaking about this to Vanity Fair and acknowledging that hers is not a good body ideal for girls to emulate [Source, emphasis mine]:

Richie explains that stress causes her to lose her appetite, and one of the factors over the past year was her broken engagement with DJ AM. "I had a bad breakup, and it eats me up inside when I'm upset about something," she explains. "I get really stressed out, and I do lose my appetite, but I do force myself to eat. I tried to put the weight on my way, eating burritos, but that wasn't working, so I started seeing a nutritionist and a doctor. I was scared that it could be something more serious, because it wasn't making any sense to me; I really was trying.... Yes, I'm too thin, but that's just a result of what's really going on with me; the bigger picture is how I deal with problems," she says.

The bolded portions above are intended to highlight the points in Nicole's interview that personify the Virgo type. Nicole has a Virgo Sun, and people with Virgo prominent in their charts often manifest stress and other negative feelings through stomach or digestive problems. Next weekend, around the 13th, could be a dangerous time for Nicole as the Sun passes over her natal retrograde Chiron in Taurus and inconjuncts her Neptune, activating the natal aspect between Chiron and Neptune. Chiron in Taurus can often represent insecurity about body image, and with the aspect to Neptune, Nicole can easily adopt a distorted view of her physical self.

If she can get past this vulnerable time, Nicole will be entering a phase of feeling better about herself as a woman with Jupiter conjuncting her Venus from June through August. During this time it will station and go direct, hopefully inaugurating a phase of more positive body image and bolstered self-esteem for Nicole.

Now, I am not typically big on Aries-Virgo relationships. Granted, it does seem that Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein cares for Nicole and has provided a stabilizing influence since they got back together. Nicole Richie At Risk

While I am loath to acknowledge as "celebrities" those individuals who are noteworthy primarily for being the spawn of celebrities or, worse yet, of rich and unfamous people, Nicole Richie has crossed over from the "heiress" to the "train wreck" category and therefore has piqued my interest.

A glance at Nicole's chart shows that this is a high-risk time for her if the rumors of self-destructive behavior are true. Mars is conjuncting Nicole's natal retrograde Chiron in Taurus, which is the focal point of a yod with her Neptune and Pluto. This aspect may indicate a distorted, shameful or painful body image or a low sense of self-worth, which serves as a release valve for other pent-up pressures. This Mars transit could be the catalyst for her to act out this self-destructive potential in some way.

Pluto, the planet of transformation, has been passing over Nicole's natal Neptune for the past year or so. While she has no birth time on record that I could find (please email me if you know it), it would not be a surprise to find that Pluto is passing through Nicole's 1st house of appearance, seeing as how she has physically transformed into an almost unrecognizable person, from chunky, skunk-haired, table-dancing hoochie to "Breakfast at Tiffany's"-looking bobblehead.

This spring, Pluto will come within two degrees of a square to her mutable Virgo Sun before turning retrograde. During this time Nicole will continue to change, possibly becoming even more fastidious about her appearance in an attempt to control every facet of her physical being. With a four-planet pile-up in Libra, including a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction and a tight Mercury-Pluto conjunction, Nicole may have something of an obsession with beauty and being loved. It would be nice if her musical endeavors turned out to be something less than abhorrent, since an artistic calling would be a wonderfully fruitful expression of Libra's jones for beauty and grace. As opposed to, say, constant self-starvation and shopping.
